I Want To Play A Game...

Being a longtime fan of the Saw series, I knew I wanted to make my own version of Billy the puppet at some point. With this weekend marking the release of Spiral, I figured it was the perfect time to upload this.

A few months back, I decided to do a quick little sculpt of the face just for fun, but as I worked on it, I knew I would want to keep going with the full character. After a little while of pushing it off, I decided to go full in on making the whole puppet. I then decided that if I was going to make Billy, I would have to add the series' iconic reverse beartrap as well! I spent a few weeks modeling that in my off time and had a great time. I learned so much about hard surface modeling, as well as new texturing techniques in Substance Painter. I knew I wanted to make a base for the models inspired by the grimy bathroom floor in the first film, but it wasn't until a few days ago that the idea struck me to create a bloody version of the spiral design from his cheek on the floor as well.

I'm incredibly happy with how this turned out. What started as a fun little sculpt turned into a great excuse to learn about hair cards, clothing, hard surface modeling, more advanced texturing, and lighting, as well as diving into some new programs for me like xNormal, Blender, and Marmoset.

Modeled in Maya, Hair Sim done in Blender/baked in xNormal, sculpted in ZBrush, retopology, and UVs done in Maya, Textures done in Substance Painter, Rendered in Marmoset.
